I am sharing with you the news from Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary of Cheryl Doherty’s retirement, to take effect at the end of January 2017. Below, you will find the official announcement from Shawn Cornett, chair of BGC of Calgary.
Having recently visited Cheryl and her team in Calgary, I can speak to the incredible leadership Cheryl has provided to her Club and her community, and most importantly to the children and youth of Calgary. She is an outstanding citizen, advocate, and mentor to so many in the movement. Her forty-three years of dedication, passion, and commitment to our mission will be greatly missed.
In her own announcement to her staff, Cheryl noted:
This is a tough decision for me in many ways. Often you leave a job because you feel you need to move on to grow or you don’t like the values or people that you are working with and in my situation that is not the case. The leadership team that I value and get to work with is energizing, passionate and want the best for all of you and the kids that you work with. I am fortunate to have colleagues in Calgary and across the Country that are inspiring and caring human beings who have supported me for years. I also have a Board of Directors and Board Chair (my boss) who joined as volunteers because they want BGCC to grow stronger and stronger for the sake of our kids.
However, for all the positive reasons to stay, there does come a time, with a heavy heart, to turn over the leadership to someone new, someone who will take BGCC to the next level and who will continue to support the fine work done internally and who will ensure our community of funders and donors support the stellar work that you all do.
I sincerely thank each and every one of you for joining our BGCC family and valuing our teamwork approach and for allowing me to come to work every day with hope for the future of our children and youth.
I know that I speak on behalf of so many of you in wishing Cheryl all the best as she embarks on this new journey. You have left an incredible legacy and we will miss you.
